“I don’t want to come across as modest but sometimes it does mystify me as to why all this has happened to me. I just sing the song to the best of my ability and do the best performance I can.”

FREDDIE MERCURY and Mary Austin shared an unbreakable bond created in the early days they were together and he never forgot what she did for him.

Everyone knows that Freddie called Mary Austin the “love of my life. ” He even wrote a song about it. But why was their bond so special? And why did it endure decades after they had split up and Freddie accepted he preferred to be with men? Their relationship was built on unshakable love, devotion and trust. In fact, from the very earliest days, Mary demonstrated why Freddie could rely on her above all others.

In a new documentary about the Queen singer, Freddie Mercury: A Christmas Story, on Channel 5, those that knew Freddie best talked about their friend and his love for Mary.

Peter Freestone was Freddie’s live-in PA for the last 13 years of his life. He said: “She (Mary) was incredibly important. Don’t forget, she looked after him for the first years when he wasn’t making a penny and Mary was working.

Boy George has great talent. I like him very much

Boy George has great talent. I like him very much. We became good friends. That Boy’s so brave – he did a lot to make society more tolerant about sexual preferences. When I started out, rock bands all wore dirty jeans, and then suddenly there I was in a Zandra Rhodes frock and make-up. It was totally outrageous. Boy George just updated the whole glam rock bit, but he did it in his own individual way. He has got staying power, which is a crucial ingredient that you need to have. I think he’s going to be here for a long while… a lot of people blow out because of the pressure one gets from being in the public eye like that, but the one thing I do know about George, is that he does love publicity. He just wants publicity at all costs and even seems to thrive on adverse publicity. Well that’s his thing and I just hope he comes through it ok.
